Revolution Day is the biggest secular public holiday in Egypt. It is celebrated on July 23. Revolution Day marks the anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 which lead to the overthrow King Farouk and establishment of the Republic of Egypt.

July 23 is National Remembrance Day in Papua New Guinea. It is a memorial day observed to honor PNG soldiers and officers who lost their lived during World War I, World War II and other military engagements within Papua New Guinea and abroad.

Peruvian Air Force Day (Día de la Fuerza Aérea del Perú) is a public holiday in Peru celebrated annually on July 23. It was created to commemorate the heroic sacrifice of the Peruvian Air Force fighter pilot José Quiñones Gonzales.

World Sjögren’s Day is an international observance held annually on July 23. It was created to raise awareness of Sjögren’s syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects multiple organs and has no known cure.

  • 1961 Born: Woody Harrelson, American actor, film director, playwright and activist whose breakout role was Woody Boyd in the sitcom Cheers.
  • 1952 The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was created when the 1951 Treaty of Paris came into force. The Treaty expired in 2002.
  • 1926 Died: Viktor Vasnetsov, Russian painter who specialized in historical and mythological subjects. One of his best known paintings is Bogatyrs.
  • 1918 Born: Pee Wee Reese, renowned American professional baseball player who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.
  • 1916 Died: William Ramsay, Scottish chemist who was awarded the 1904 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of the noble (inert) gases.
  • 1906 Born: Vladimir Prelog, Croatian-Swiss organic chemist who was awarded the 1975 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, sharing it with John Cornforth.
