3 DIY Peel-Off Facial Masks for Clean and Glowing Skin

3 DIY Peel-Off Facial Masks for Clean and Glowing SkinUsing peel-off facial masks is a great way to get rid of blackheads and to restore your skin’s natural healthy glow. Many cosmetic brands offer cleansing and moisturizing peel-off masks, but they often cost quite a lot compared to other types of facial masks. Luckily, you can make your own DIY peel-off facial masks using simple ingredients you can find right in your kitchen.

Commercial peel-off masks are typically formulated with alginic acid, also known as alginate. It is a polysaccharide found in brown algae that has an ability to bind with water and form a viscous gum. Although it is possible to buy sodium alginate powder, there’s a cheaper and easily available alternative that can be used in DIY masks. We’re talking about gelatin. Let’s figure out how to make peel-off facial masks with gelatin.

Activated Charcoal Peel-Off Mask

Activated charcoal is a great cleanser for clogged pores. It effectively removes dirt, grime and sebum out of your skin’s pores, helping get rid of blackheads and acne. Gelatin replenishes skin collagen and helps lock in moisture, which reduces fine lines and prevents dehydration.

Combine ½ tsp unflavored gelatin powder and ½ tsp activated charcoal in a small bowl. Add 1 tbsp warm water. The water should be neither too cold (because gelatin doesn’t dissolve in cold water) nor too hot (because boiling water makes gelatin lose its gelling properties). Mix well until you get a smooth, lump-free paste.

Using a brush, apply the mixture all over your face, except for your eyes, eyebrows and mouth. Once your face is coated, apply a couple more layers to thicken the mask. Let the mask dry completely (this may take some time), then peel it off in an upward direction. Remove the residue by washing your face with warm water.

Orange Peel-Off Mask

Orange juice is a rich source of vitamin C that has strong antioxidant properties. It reduces damage caused by free radicals and thus slows down the signs of aging. In addition, it contains citric acid that rejuvenates the skin and prevents acne breakouts.

In a heat-resistant bowl, combine 4 tbsp fresh orange juice and 2 tbsp unflavored gelatin powder. Place the bowl in a double boiler and heat the mixture until the gelatin powder dissolves completely, stirring consistently. Do not let the mixture boil because it will make gelatin lose it gelling properties.

Once the gelatin is dissolved, remove the bowl from the double boiler and let it cool. Apply the mask to your face just like in the previous recipe and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes, then peel it off and wash your face to remove the remaining mask.

Instead of orange juice, you can use milk (1½ tbsp milk per 1 tbsp gelatin). It contains lactic acid that acts as a mild natural exfoliant. In addition, milk provides the skin with protein, calcium and other nutrients, as well as improves complexion and prevents pigmentation.

Matcha & Yogurt Peel-Off Mask

This is a very simple mask made with four ingredients you can buy in a grocery store. Matcha green powder contains numerous antioxidants that prevent premature skin aging and make the skin look glowing. Greek yogurt contains lactic acid that helps dissolve impurities in the pores. It also tightens the skin and helps regulate sebum secretion.

Mix 3 tbsp unflavored gelatin powder with 3 tbsp matcha powder and ¼ cup warm water. Add 2 egg whites and blend well until the gelatin is dissolved. Then add 1 tsp unflavored and unsweetened Greek yogurt to the mixture and whisk everything together until the mask is thick and well-blended. Place the mask in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to let it gel. Don’t let it freeze! You need to achieve a creamy, gelled texture.

Apply the mask to clean skin. Make sure to work fast because it becomes thicker as it cools. Let the mask sit for at least 30 minutes. When it dries and tightens, peel the mask off by lifting it upwards in one piece, then rinse your face with cool water.
