5 DIY Facial Products with Green Tea

5 DIY Facial Products with Green TeaGreen tea infusion and matcha (green tea powder) are excellent skincare ingredients because of green tea’s high content of antioxidants and other biologically active substances. There are a lot of DIY skincare products you can make using green tea, ranging from facial toners to facial scrubs to face washes. Check out these easy recipes you can try at home.

Green Tea Toner for Oily Skin

Although green tea is suitable for all skin types, it is especially good for oily, combination and problem skin because it contains tannins. Tannins are a class of biomolecules with astringent properties; they regulate sebum (skin oil) production in the epidermis and reduce the appearance of pores, preventing shiny complexion and acne breakouts. Homemade facial toner with green tea will effectively balance your skin and give it a healthy complexion.

To make this toner, you’ll need 2 tbsp honey, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp green tea, 1 tbsp witch hazel, 1 tbsp baking soda, 4 drops tea tree essential oil and 3 drops vitamin E. Combine green tea, honey and lemon juice. Mix until well-blended and add witch hazel, baking soda, tea tree oil and vitamin E. Mix again and pour into a bottle. Apply the toner using a cotton pad after washing your face. It can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Green Tea Face Wash

Just like green tea toner, you can use this facial wash regardless of your skin type. However, it is acne-prone skin that will benefit from it the most. Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, green tea gently removes excess oil from the skin without causing it to feel dry and tight, kills acne-causing bacteria, and prevents skin redness, itching, flaking, blackheads and acne breakouts.

Brew ¼ cup of strong green tea (you can use tea leaves, tea bags or matcha powder, it doesn’t make much of a difference) and let it cool. Mix ¼ cup liquid Castile soap, ¾ tsp sweet almond oil (or any other carrier oil, for example, olive or coconut) and 8–10 drops of any essential oil you like. For example, tea tree and eucalyptus oils are great for acne-prone skin, while lavender oil is an excellent soothing ingredient for sensitive skin. Add green tea and mix well. Pour the mixture into a pump bottle. Shake the bottle before each use to combine all ingredients as they may separate in between uses.

Green Tea Facial Scrub

Green tea leaves or powder can be used as a gentle skin exfoliant. They will help to remove dead cells and reveal new skin, keeping your complexion from becoming dull and lifeless. In addition, the antioxidants in green tea balance the skin, prevent premature aging and make the skin look glowing with health.

Combine 1 tbsp dried green tea leaves or matcha powder, 2 tbsp organic honey, ½ cup olive oil and 1 cup cane sugar. Mix all ingredients together until well-blended and transfer into a dark class jar. Screw the lid and store your scrub in the refrigerator.

Green Tea Skin Brightening Mask

Due to its high content of tannins and antioxidants, green tea has a skin brightening effect. To complement and enhance this effect, you can combine green tea with honey that nourishes and gently exfoliates the skin, coconut oil that has a powerful hydrating effect, and lemon juice that whitens the skin and reduces pigmentation.

In a small bowl, combine 2 tbsp organic honey, 2 tbsp lemon juice and 1 tsp melted coconut oil. Add 1 tbsp matcha powder or green tea leaves from a tea bag. Using a whisk, mix the ingredients until smooth. Apply the mixture to your face with your fingertips and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse off the mask with warm water, splash your face with cool water, pat it dry and apply moisturizer. Don’t apply the mask to sunburned or otherwise damaged skin since lemon juice is an irritant.

Green Tea & Coffee Face Serum

A serum is a skincare product designed to give the skin an instant boost and make it look radiant. Most serums have just one active ingredient that is responsible for their effect, such as vitamin C or E, hyaluronic acid, etc. This homemade facial serum owes its effect to caffeine that can be found in both coffee and tea. It brightens the skin, makes it look rejuvenated, and reduces the appearance of puffy eyes and under eye circles.

In a large pan, combine 4 ounces grapeseed oil, 1 tbsp jojoba oil, 1 tbsp loose leaf green tea, 1 tbsp ground coffee, 10 drops lavender essential oil and 10 drops grapefruit essential oil. Put the pan on low heat and stir continuously until the coffee dissolves. Remove from heat and strain through a coffee filter. Transfer into an amber glass bottle and apply to your skin every evening.
