Most types of tea, including black tea, green tea, dark tea, oolong, yellow tea and white tea, are harvested from the plant Camellia sinensis. The main differences between the various types of tea arise from their degree of oxidation. Green tea undergoes the least amount of oxidation among all the tea types, which allows it to retain most of the chemical composition of the fresh tea leaves. As a result, it is rich in caffeine and antioxidants.

Matcha is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves. The plants for matcha are grown in shade, which results in a higher content of caffeine and theanine. Matcha green tea contains even more antioxidants than regular green tea. Due to its antioxidant content, it combats free radicals that cause premature skin aging. That’s why matcha powder is widely used in anti-age, rejuvenating, and revitalizing face masks.

Simple Matcha Green Tea Face Mask

The easiest way to make a matcha face mask is to mix 1 tsp matcha powder with the same amount of raw honey. You may use slightly more or less honey depending on its consistency. Spread the mask over the skin of your face and neck, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, and rinse off with warm water or remove with a wet washcloth. This mask soothes the skin, evens skin tone, increases skin elasticity, and leaves the skin hydrated and supple.

You can replace honey with aloe vera gel or water if you have oily or combination skin, and add some organic coconut oil for more nourishment if you have dry skin. Another great alternative to honey is plain yogurt. It provides the skin with nutrients and evens skin tone thanks to containing lactic acid.

Matcha & Bentonite Clay Face Mask

This mask has a 3-in-1 effect: Bentonite clay detoxifies and balances the skin, matcha provides it with antioxidants, and coconut oil and aloe vera actively moisturize and nourish the skin. It will give your skin an instant boost and make it feel refreshed and revitalized.

In a bowl, combine 3 tbsp Bentonite clay, 2 tbsp melted coconut oil, 1 tbsp matcha, and 1 tbsp aloe vera gel. Mix all the ingredients together with a spoon until a paste begins to form. Slowly add 100 ml heavily steeped green tea, continuing to stir. Add 6 drops of peppermint essential oil and 4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Mix well until the oils are evenly incorporated and the paste has a thick and sticky consistency.

Apply the paste to clean, damp skin of your face and neck. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

Cucumber & Matcha Face Mask for Sunburned Skin

Sunburn results in red, itchy and peeling skin that desperately needs hydration and soothing. Aloe vera gel and cucumber contained in this mask moisturize and relieve sunburned skin, while matcha powder stimulates its regeneration thanks to antioxidants.

Peel and grate a small cucumber. Add ½ cup of aloe vera gel and 1 tsp matcha powder, mix all the ingredients together. You can also add 200 mg powdered aspirin for an additional anti-inflammatory effect, but this ingredient is optional.

Apply the mask to your skin, leave for 15 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water. If the itching or burning sensation caused by sunburn gets worse, wash the mask off immediately.
