National Security Technician Day Date in the current year: January 23, 2025

Security technicians are professionals who specialize in installing, maintaining and troubleshooting systems that ensure the safety and security of individuals, businesses, or organizations. They can work in a variety of settings, from residential homes to large corporate offices, banks, or government facilities. Some may specialize in specific industries, such as healthcare or retail.

Security technicians typically work with both physical and digital security measures. Their primary responsibilities may vary by setting and role, but they typically include

• Installing and maintaining security systems such as surveillance cameras, alarms, and access control systems.
• Testing these systems to ensure they are functioning as intended.
• Performing regular maintenance to prevent problems with security hardware and/or software.
• Identifying and troubleshooting problems that do occur.
• Upgrading outdated systems to meet current security standards and incorporate new technology.
• Advising clients on the most effective security measures based on their needs.
• Performing security assessments to identify vulnerabilities.

Depending on their expertise, security technicians may have cybersecurity responsibilities such as implementing digital protections for IT systems (firewalls, encryption, etc.) and monitoring networks for unauthorized access attempts and security breaches.

To do their jobs well, security technicians must have the necessary technical knowledge, as well as soft skills such as attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure in an emergency. Communication skills are also important, as security technicians must be able to explain the intricacies of security systems to customers.

Although more than one-third of security technicians in the United States are college graduates, it is possible to become a security technician with a high school diploma or GED certificate – of course, after training in the field and getting some hands-on experience (such as an internship). Keep in mind that some jurisdictions require security technicians to be licensed.

National Security Technician Day was established in 2022 and was celebrated for the first time on January 23, 2023. It is sponsored by three security industry organizations: the Foundation for Advancing Security Talent (FAST), the Security Industry Association (SIA) and the Electronic Security Association (ESA). The main goal of the holiday is to shine a spotlight on the amazing contributions of security technicians, which often go unnoticed by the general public.

Individuals and companies in the security industry are encouraged to celebrate National Security Technician Day and recognize the hard work and dedication of security technicians. Company celebrations can include team events, luncheons, seminars and webinars, awards ceremonies for outstanding technicians, swag giveaways, gifts or bonuses, and social media campaigns using the hashtag #NationalSecurityTechnicianDay.
