Azadirachta indica, commonly known as neem or Indian lilac, is a tree in the mahogany family native to the Indian subcontinent. It grows in tropical and semi-tropical regions of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Maldives. Products made from different parts of the neem tree have been used in India for more than 2,000 years for their medicinal properties.

Neem is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, etc. It inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria on the skin surface, balances the skin’s pH, regulates sebum secretion, and soothes irritated skin. Dried and powdered neem leaves can be used as an ingredient in DIY face masks for all skin types, especially oily, combination, and problem skin.

Neem & Lemon Face Mask

Both neem and lemon have antiseptic and astringent properties that help tighten pores, reduce oiliness, and keep your skin looking healthy and glowing. In addition, lemon has a whitening effect. It reduces blemishes and acne scars, as well as improves overall complexion.

In a non-metal bowl, combine 2 tsp of neem powder, 2 tsp of rose water, and 1 tsp of lemon juice. If you don’t have rose water, you can use regular water instead. Blend all the ingredients to make a smooth paste. You can add more neem powder or water to get the desired consistency. Apply the paste to clean skin and leave it to dry. Rinse with cool water.

Add 1 tbsp of raw honey and 5 drops of lavender essential oil (or any other essential oil of your choice; for example, tea tree oil is really great for oily and acne-prone skin). Mix all the ingredients together until well-blended and apply to your skin. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes, then rinse.
