4 DIY Lip Scrub Recipes for Smooth and Kissable Lips

4 DIY Lip Scrub Recipes for Smooth and Kissable LipsA lot of people exfoliate their face and body on a regular basis, but fewer know that lips need exfoliation, too. When your lips get dry, they start to flake and peel. By exfoliating them, you will get rid of dead skin that makes your lips look unhealthy, and stimulate skin regeneration. Lip scrubs are very easy to make at home. Here are 4 lip scrub recipes that you can try.

All scrubs are formulated with an exfoliant that removes dead cells and polishes the skin. The best exfoliant for lip scrubs is sugar. Sugar crystals melt on contact with skin so they won’t scratch your lips. Besides, sugar is edible so it won’t hurt you if you accidentally swallow some. In addition to sugar, DIY lip scrubs usually contain carrier oils, honey, and other natural ingredients, many of which you can find in your pantry.

Before experimenting with homemade scrubs, you need to know how to exoliate your lips properly so that you don’t cause any damage. The skin of your lips is very thin so you should be extremely gentle. If your lips are cracked, wait until they heal before exfolating. Don’t exfoliate too often. Once a week is enough to keep your lips smooth. Finally, your should always moisturize your lips after exfoliating.

Using a lip scrub is easy. Apply a generous amount of product to your lips in a circular motion, let it sit for some time (from 1 to 10 minutes, depending on the ingredients), then gently remove it with a wet washcloth. And don’t forget to apply a rich lip balm to prevent dryness.

Coconut & Honey Lip Scrub

Coconut oil contains fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish the skin. It is a great emollient that will keep your lips soft and supple. And both coconut oil and honey have antiseptic properties. They will inhibit the grow of pathogenic bacteria and keep your lips from getting inflammation.

In a bowl, combine 1 tbsp organic coconut oil and 1 tbsp organic honey. You may need to melt the oil in a double boiler or a microwave first because it’s normally solid at room temperature. Mix until a thick and smooth consistency. Add 2 tbsp brown sugar and mix to form a thick paste.

Transfer the scrub into a small glass container with lid. Keep in mind that DIY cosmetics are free of preservatives so they won’t last long. The shelf life of this scrub is about two weeks if kept refrigerated.

Peppermint Lip Scrub

Peppermint is a refreshing ingredient that improves microcirculation in your lips, makes them appear fuller, and creates a “just bitten” effect that makes the lips look kissable. The scrub also contains lightweight grapeseed oil that moisturizes the lips and provides them with unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants.

In a bowl, mix 2 tbsp sugar and 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or melted coconut oil. Add 8–10 drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil and mix well. Blend in ½ tsp grapeseed oil, stir well, and transfer the scrub in a container.

Chocolate Lip Scrub

This rich and delicious lip scrub provides deep hydration, neutralizes free radicals, and stimulates skin regeneration. To make it, mix 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tbsp cocoa powder, 2 tsp olive oil, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and ¾ tsp honey in a glass bowl. Stir well until you get a thick, lump-free paste.

Kiwi & Strawberry Lip Scrub

Kiwi and strawberry contain fruit acids that produce a peeling effect. So this scrub basically combines mechanical and chemical exfoliation while still being very gentle. In addition, these fruits are a source of vitamin C that has strong antioxidant properties.

Pure 1 strawberry and ½ soft, ripe kiwi using a blender. In a small bowl, mix 6 tbsp sugar and 2 tbsp olive oil, stir until well blended. Add the pureed fruits, stir well one more time. For extra nourishment, you can add 2 drops of vitamin E. Transfer the scrub in a container and let it cool in the refrigerator before applying.
