Mirrors in Interior Design
You can hardly imagine interior design of an apartment or a private residence without at least one mirror.
A mirror in the hallway helps you to prepare for leaving the house; a mirror in the bathroom helps to do makeup, make a hairstyle or perform hygienic care. Herewith along with its utilitarian functions a mirror perfectly performs another function – aesthetic one.
A mirror in interior design is a unique tool for manipulating space. Mirrors can help you to literally transform the space: it will become large and lighter. Mirrors can be installed as separate objects or as a part of wall, ceiling, floor decoration. Furniture with various mirror insets is also widely used in modern interior design.
Most of modern designers feel positive about using mirrors in interior design. They never lose an opportunity to “play” with space using various “mirror tricks”. For example, you can stand two mirrors opposite each other and create a real Looking-Glass world, tempting and mysterious.
Mirrors used in interior design can have different shapes and decoration. A mirror can be set in a frame or in a fillet. Mirrors can be faceted, artificially aged, decorated with various patterns. The variety of shapes really strikes: you can find round, square, rectangular, oval, hexagonal, octagonal, diamond-shaped mirrors.
In order to give zest to your interior design with mirrors you may abandon traditional forms and choose a really unconventional mirror: a mirror in the shape of a human silhouette, an animal, a flower, a bird, a fish etc. One more interesting solution for your interior design: take several original mirrors of different shapes and arrange them in an intentionally chaotic order. You can decorate any room with such mirrors: a bedroom, a living-room, a hallway and even a nursery.
The sizes of mirrors used in interior design can vary from the smallest ones (palm-sized) to really large mirrors taking up the whole end of the room. “Playing” with mirror sizes you can achieve various interesting effect. For example, a large mirror may become... an additional window! In this case you should not set it into a fillet or frame. You should decorate it with textile instead. The final touch is a shelf imitating a windowsill covered with flowers or nice knick-knackery.
Mirror lighting plays a very important role in interior design. The easiest way to illuminate a mirror is to install one or two lamps near the mirror or to fix two lamp brackets directly on the mirror frame or fillet. One more interesting and unconventional solution is a mirror with built in lights. Such mirrors are illuminated with soft scattered light which imparts an absolutely inimitable look to them.
Such materials as mirror tiles and mirror mosaics can impart a brand new appearance to a mirror and freshen up your interior design. You can make a gorgeous wall picture of mirror tiles and mosaics or even tile one of the walls in the room with them. You also can lay such tiles or mosaics on the floor. Small pieces of mirror mosaics are also used for decorating separate interior accessories.
Interior design with mirrors will look most attractive if it is designed competently, taking into account all the rules of ergonomics as well as peculiarities of the premises. The best solution is to entrust the creation of interior design to a professional. In this case the results of his work will please you with its originality, beauty and, of course, comfort for a long time.
