Indonesia Comic Con is owned and organized by ReedPOP, the offshoot of Reed Exhibitions which holds numerous pop culture events all over the world. Since hosting its first New York Comic Con in 2006, ReedPOP has launched and acquired a lot of fan conventions including Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2), PAX, OZ Comic Con, Star Wars Celebration and UFC Fan Expo.
Indonesia Comic Con is a large-scale expo and fair which features presentations of upcoming projects held by studios and publishers, giveaways and lotteries, panels with comic book authors, movie stars and other special guests, exclusive screenings and sneak-peeks at upcoming blockbusters, Artists’ Alley, branded photo backdrops and photo booths where attendees can take a picture with cosplayers, a cosplay contest, parties featuring popular DJs, and a bunch of other exciting events and activities.
Cosplay championship is one of the convention’s main attractions. Each contestant may participate with only one costume, and at least 60% of the costume should be constructed by the contestant (this means that pre-fabricated, store-bought costumes aren’t allowed to compete). The best cosplayers are determined by reputable judges. The winners are awarded with valuable prizes.
Each year Indonesia Comic Con features special guests such as well-known entertainers, comic book artists, writers and publishes, cosplayers, toy designers, gave developers and publishers, and other entertainment industry representatives from Indonesia and abroad. Fans can interact with them during panels, photo ops, autograph sessions and other events held by the organizers.
The scale of Indonesia Comic Con grows every year. For example, the 2015 conventions attracted more than 20,500 fans and 347 journalists, with about 140 companies participating as exhibitors.
In 2021, the event was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
