Most multi-genre entertainment and comic conventions held around the world are modeled after San Diego Comic-Con International held annually in San Diego, California. Founded in 1970, the San Diego Comic Con is now one of the world’s largest events of its kind.
Today many countries host at least one big fan convention and Russia is not an exception. Two of its biggest cities, Moscow and Saint Petersburg, each have their own Comic Con. Originally known as Comic Con Saint Petersburg, Petersburg’s convention was renamed Epic Con Saint Petersburg in 2017. The event is also referred to as the Saint Petersburg Epic Convention.
Epic Con Saint Petersburg offers a rich and diverse program. The convention is centered around the expo area featuring stands dedicated to various science fiction and fantasy universes, vendors and other exhibitors. The convention also features interactive entertainment and contests, a spectacular stage show with a cosplay contest, video game tournaments, exclusive previews and screenings, panels and workshops conducted by writers, artists and publishers who share useful and interesting information about the comic book industry, science fiction and fantasy.
The convention’s exposition area features an impressive selection of amateur and professionals stands showcasing different fandoms, from Harry Potter and Doctor Who to Transformers and Futurama. In the expo area, one can also find exhibitors and vendors such as comic book publishers, booksellers, geek shops, handmade jewelry crafters, video and board game developers, gadget manufacturers, etc. Many vendors offers special convention discounts, selling their products at lower prices than normally.
Like most other fan conventions, Epic Con Saint Petersburg features media guests, primarily actors known for their roles in science fiction and fantasy films and television series. Past guests include Daniel Logan (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Stanislav Ianevski (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and Ken Stott (The Hobbit film trilogy). Attendees also have an opportunity to meet Russian science fiction and fantasy authors such as Andrei Belyanin.
