Traditionally, paraprofessionals assisted experts in their field, a practice that still applies to some occupations (for example, paralegals in relation to lawyers). However, in recent times, many paraprofessionals have become professionals in their own right.

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day is dedicated to paraprofessional educators, also known as paras, paraeducators, educational assistants, classroom assistants, teaching assistants, instructional assistants, or teachers’ aides. These professionals are prevalent in the United States, Canada, and some European countries.

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day was established to recognize the essential role of paraprofessionals in supporting teachers and students. Paraprofessionals are not “less than” teachers. They have their own specific role that makes it easier for teachers to do their jobs efficiently and ensures that all students receive the attention and help they need. Besides, a growing number of paraprofessionals are working independently with small groups of students, leading extracurricular activities, and teaching lessons under a teacher’s supervision.

Schools across the nation celebrate Paraprofessional Appreciation Day in a variety of ways. These include making special announcements to recognize paraprofessionals’ hard work and dedication, giving out handwritten thank-you notes from students and teachers, hosting appreciation breakfasts or lunches, and launching social media campaigns using the hashtag #ParaprofessionalAppreciationDay.
