Birthday of Princess Isabella of Denmark Date in the current year: April 21, 2025

Princess Isabella of Denmark was born on April 21, 2007 to then Crown Prince Frederik and his wife, Crown Princess Mary (née Mary Donaldson). She is the second of the royal couple’s children; her older brother, Prince Christian, was born in 2005. The princess was named after Isabella of Austria, Queen consort of Denmark, Norway and Sweden as the wife of King Christian II.
The following day, her birthday was celebrated with a 21-gun salute fired from Holmen Naval Base in Copenhagen and Kronborg Castle in Helsingør. Interestingly, Princess Isabella was the first Danish princess to have her birthday celebrated with a 21-gun salute. Before that, the number of shots depended on the sex of the newborn royal child: 17 shots for a girl and 21 for a boy. Isabella was the first girl born into the Danish royal family since 1946, when her great-aunt Queen Anne-Marie of Greece was born.
Princess Isabella was christened in the Royal Chapel at Fredensborg Palace on July 1, 2007. Her godparents included Princess Alexia of Greece (Anne-Marie’s daughter) and Denmark and Mathilde, Duchess of Brabant (later Queen Mathilde of Belgium). In December, she was officially confirmed as third in the line of succession to the Danish throne, after her father, Crown Prince Frederik, and her older brother, Prince Christian.
The princess undertook her first official engagement at the age of seven; it was the christening of the ferry M/F Princess Isabella, named in her honor. She also took part in several official engagements while accompanying her parents on their official visits to Greenland in 2014 and the Faroe Islands in 2018.
In 2009, the Danish Act of Succession was amended to abolish male-preference primogeniture in favor of absolute primogeniture. As a result of this change, Princess Isabella did not lose precedence in the line of succession when her younger brother, Prince Vincent, was born in 2011. In 2024, Princess Isabella’s grandmother, Queen Margrethe II, abdicated from the throne and was succeeded by her son, Crown Prince Frederik, as King Frederik X, making Isabella second in line to the throne.
Princess Isabella’s birthday was designated as an official flag-flying day in 2025, when the princess turned 18 and was no longer a minor. The official celebration of her 18th birthday began on April 11 in Aarhus with a birthday event for talented young people at Aarhus City Hall. The second official event took place in Copenhagen on April 15, with a birthday performance on the Old Stage of the Royal Danish Theatre attended by the Princess, the Royal Family and more than 1,000 young people from all over the country who had won tickets in a lottery. Princess Isabella’s actual birthday that year coincided with Easter Monday and was therefore a public holiday.
