Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day Date in the current year: March 3, 2025

Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day The Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day is celebrated on March 3 in Romania and Poland. It was established in 2023 to celebrate the friendship between the two countries and commemorate the 1921 Convention on Defensive Alliance.

Due to their geographical proximity, Poland and Romania have a long shared history. For example, the Principality of Moldavia, which united with Wallachia to form the modern Romanian state in 1859, was once a vassal state of Poland. The two nations officially established diplomatic relations in 1919, a few months after the restoration of Polish independence (Second Polish Republic).

Beginning in 1921, Poland and Romania signed a series of treaties that defined their foreign relations in the interwar period. The first of these treaties was the Convention on Defensive Alliance, signed on March 3, 1921. In this treaty, the two nations pledged to come to each other’s armed aid if one of them was attacked on its eastern borders (presumably by Soviet Union).

When the Second World War broke out, Romania declared neutrality, but agreed to help transport Polish gold to Constanța, from where it was evacuated to France via Turkey, and to receive Polish refugees.

Today, Romania and Poland have strong diplomatic, economic, and military ties, largely driven by their shared interests within NATO and the European Union. Poland has an embassy in Bucharest, while Romania has one in Warsaw. In recent years, high-level diplomatic meetings have been frequent, reinforcing their strategic partnership and mutual interest in productive bilateral cooperation.

Both countries support regional security cooperation, particularly in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. They participate in joint military exercises and defense initiatives, such as the Bucharest Nine (B9) and the Three Seas Initiative, which focus on regional security and infrastructure development. Poland has a military contingent stationed in Romania and vice versa.

Economically, trade relations between Poland and Romania are growing, with increasing investment and business exchanges. Politically, the two nations agree on many EU and NATO policies and advocate for stronger transatlantic ties and regional stability.

The Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day was a joint initiative of the two countries’ Foreign Ministers, Bogdan Aurescu (Romania) and Zbigniew Rau (Poland). Its establishment was announced in April 2023, and the first celebration took place on March 3, 2024. The main goal of the holiday is to reflect the long-lasting partnership between Romania and Poland, based on a common historical experience, and to underline willingness to further strengthen the relations between the two nations.

In honor of the Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day, both countries organize various events commemorating the important milestones in their shared history, such as the establishment of diplomatic relations, the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe, the renewal of the bilateral Strategic Partnership, and others.
