5 DIY Hair Masks with Shikakai Powder

5 DIY Hair Masks with Shikakai PowderShikakai (Acacia concinna) is a widely used Ayurvedic plant valued for its detergent properties. Due to its high content of saponins and naturally low pH, it has a delicate cleansing effect and doesn’t strip hair of natural oils. When used as an ingredient in homemade hair masks, shikakai acts as a detangler and makes the hair softer and shinier. Here are 5 DIY hair mask recipes with shikakai powder for you to try at home.

Ayurvedic Hair Mask for Dandruff and Hair Loss Treatment

In addition to shikakai powder, this hair mask contains methi seed powder and brahmi leaf powder. Methi (fenugreek) provides hair follicles with protein, B vitamins and other nutrients, which helps reduce hair loss and stimulate hair growth. In addition, it makes the hair look shiny and prevents premature gray hair. Brahmi (Gotu kola) reduces dryness and prevents itchy and flaky scalp, promotes hair growth, and strengthens hair structure.

In a non-metallic bowl, mix 2 tbsp of shikakai powder, 2 tbsp of methi powder, and 1 tbsp of brahmi powder. Add 3 tbsp of plain unsweetened yogurt and stir well to make a smooth paste. You may need more or less yogurt depending on its thickness so we recommend that you add it gradually. Finally, add 2 tbsp of freshly squeezed lemon juice and mix all ingredients until well combined and smooth. Apply the mask to damp hair, leave for 30 minutes, rinse thoroughly.

Shikakai & Coconut Oil Hair Mask for Strong and Shiny Hair

Coconut oil is one of the most common hair treatments in the Indian subcontinent. Due to its high saturated fat content, it actively nourishes and moisturizes the hair, prevents brittle hair and split ends, and makes the hair look glossy and shiny. In addition, this mask contains amla powder. Amla (Indian gooseberry) is a rich source of antioxidants that protect hair follicles from the harmful effects of free radicals.

Mix 1 tbsp of shikakai powder, 1 tbsp of amla powder, and 2 tbsp of liquid coconut oil (to liquefy the oil, melt it in a double boiler or a microwave). Leave the mixture for three hours to infuse the oil with shikakai and amla. Warm and strain the oil, massage it onto your scalp, and leave for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.

Anti Hair Loss Mask

This mask is packed with nutrients and compounds that improve blood circulation in the scalp. As a result, it nourishes and stimulates hair follicles, significantly reducing hair loss.

In a bowl, mix 1 tsp of reetha (soapnut) powder and 1 tsp of amla powder. Add 2 egg whites and mix well. Stir in 2 tsp of shikakai powder. Mix all the ingredients together until you get a smooth paste. Apply the mask to your hair and scalp, leave it for 25 minutes, rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Shikakai & Honey Hair Rinse

This nourishing hair rinse makes the hair much tamer and gives it an instant shine. If you have dry hair, you can use this rinse instead of your regular shampoo. Due to its high content of saponins, shikakai is a great cleanser that doesn’t strip the hair of moisture.

Heat 1 cup of filtered water in a pot. When it comes to a boil, add 1 tbsp of shikakai powder and 1 tsp of olive or sweet almond oil. Cover the pot with a lid and let the mixture steep for about 20 minutes. Strain the mixture, add 2 tbsp of honey, stir well, and let the mixture cool. After you shampoo your hair as usual, pour the rinse through your hair, massage it into your scalp for about 5 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Shikakai & Curd Hair Mask

The term “curd” is generally used to refer to dairy products obtained by coagulating milk, such as cottage cheese, farmer cheese, curd cheese, paneer, etc. In the Indian subcontinent, however, it is used to refer to a traditional yogurt, also known as dahi. It is packed with protein, fat, lactose, vitamins, and minerals. Shikakai and curd hair mask soothes the scalp, effectively deals with issues like flaking and dandruff, and actively nourishes the hair.

Combine 2 tbsp of shikakai powder with 2–3 tbsp of dahi (or Greek yogurt, or any other unsweetened and unflavored yogurt). Mix well to get a thick, smooth paste. Add 2–3 drops of vitamin E oil for extra nourishment and mix once more. Apply the mask to the entire length of your hair, put on a shower cap, let the mask sit for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with a mild shampoo and cool water.
