The inaugural edition of the Fumetto comic convention was held in 1992. What started as quite a modest event has since grown to become one of Europe’s leading comic book festivals that attracts tens of thousands of visitors. Fumetto is focused on comics as a form of art rather than a pop culture genre.
Fumetto is regarded as a major platform for artistically ambitious comics in Europe. It prides itself on its rich and diverse exhibition program that showcases the finest comics from different countries. Fumetto is a not-for-profit arts and culture event known for its high demands on art and museum quality exhibition and educational program centered on comics. Every edition of the festival features works by both established and up-and-coming artists because one of the main goals of Fumetto is to discover and promote young talent.
Fumetto runs over nine days and embraces various forms of art including comic, graphic arts, street art, painting, installation, animation, theater and performance. The festival hosts about 10 main exhibitions and several dozen satellite exhibitions. Its creative atmosphere and avant-garde approach attract about 50,000 comic and art lovers who value innovative comic art.
Unlike most comic book conventions, Fumetto doesn’t host a trade fair, focusing on artists and exhibitions instead. Along with exhibitions, its program includes book signings, film screenings, music concerts, theater performances, and more. Fumetto also has an extensive educational program featuring lectures, talks, panel discussions, podcasts, guided tours, and drawing classes.
Fumetto also hosts a comic competition dedicated to a new theme every year. Artists submit their works prior to the festival. Around 50 comics are chosen to be exhibited during the festival. Fumetto awards prizes to the best comics in several categories.
