National Hunting and Fishing Day Date in the current year: September 28, 2024
Contrary to popular belief, anglers and hunters are avid supporters of wildlife conservation. They stand for sustainable use of game and fish. American outdoor sportsmen have made a great contribution to protecting and improving vital habitat and saving many species from unregulated exploitation.
In the late 1960s, Ira Joffe, a gun shop owner from Pennsylvania, suggested an official day of gratitude to outdoor sportsmen. In 1970, Outdoor Sportsmen Day was officially celebrated in Pennsylvania for the first time. In 1971, celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day was suggested. Finally, in 1972 the holiday was officially established by Congress and President.
National Hunting and Fishing Day focuses on raising public awareness about the importance of the wise use of natural resources, promoting wildlife conversation and outdoor sports. On this day, local, state, regional and national organizations hold fishing- and hunting-related events providing participants with an opportunity to experience traditional outdoor sports.
