Libraries Day in Belarus Date in the current year: September 15, 2024

Libraries Day in Belarus The Republic of Belarus annually celebrates Libraries Day on September 15. This observance was established by presidential decree in 2001 under the initiative of the Belarusian Library Association.

Libraries Day is a professional day for all workers of Belarusian libraries, as well as an important day for all lovers of reading. It's estimated, that about a half of the population of Belarus uses libraries. One library accounts for 2.4 thousand people in Belarus, that almost complies with UNESCO standards.

Traditionally, various events are held on Libraries Day. They are aimed at raising the status and prestige of the libraries, cultural and educational centers. These can be solemn meetings of librarians, exhibitions, round-table discussions, presentations of various publications etc.

September 15 was chosen to celebrate Libraries Day, because it's the anniversary of opening of the library of the Belarusian State University in 1922 in Minsk. Nowadays this is the National Library of Belarus.
