Doug the Pug Day in Nashville Date in the current year: May 20, 2026
The city of Nashville, Tennessee, celebrates Doug the Pug Day every year on May 20. This fun holiday honors Doug the Pug, the most followed pug on the internet, who happens to live in Nashville.Doug the Pug was born on May 20, 2012; he first gained public recognition two years later when his owner, Leslie Mosier, created an Instagram account for him. Doug quickly became popular because of his expressive face, elaborate costumes, and highly anthropomorphized online persona. As Doug’s Instagram following grew, Mosier expanded his online presence to other platforms, including the now-defunct Vine, as well as YouTube and TikTok. Mosier also released a book entitled Doug the Pug: The King of Pop Culture in November 2016, which became a New York Times bestseller. She then took Doug on an international book tour.
Part of Doug’s appeal was how thoroughly he was anthropomorphized. He appeared “reacted” to trends, and participated in sketches treating him as a mildly exhausted human celebrity trapped in a pug’s body. Doug’s content also frequently referenced pop culture; he often appeared dressed as characters from popular movies and TV shows, which helped expand his audience beyond dog lovers.
Over time, Mosier developed Doug into a commercial brand, releasing more books and merchandise. He has appeared at various events, such as meet-and-greets, movie premieres, and music festivals. He has also made appearances with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, the Jonas brothers, John Legend, Demi Lovato, Shakira, Ed Sheeran, JoJo Siwa, Cole Sprouse, Meghan Trainor, Brendon Urie, Jonathan Van Ness, and actors from the television series Schitt’s Creek and Stranger Things.
Doug has made appearances in several music videos, including “Swish Swish” by Katy Perry, “Irresistible” by Fall Out Boy, and “Kissing Strangers” by DNCE. He also voiced Monchi, the Mitchells’ pet dog, in the animated movie The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
In 2022, Mosier started a charity foundation in Doug’s name. The Doug the Pug Foundation provides support outside of treatment and brings joy to children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
As of 2026, Doug had amassed over 1 billion views on YouTube and a following of 5.9 million on TikTok, 5.8 million on Facebook, 3.8 million on Instagram, and 2.7 million on X (Twitter). This makes him the most-followed pug on the internet Doug is often cited as one of the first examples of a “pet influencer” who helped shape the modern pet influencer industry, in which animals have sponsorships, branded partnerships, and entire management teams.
In 2019, Nashville Mayor David Briley declared May 20, Doug’s birthday, Doug the Pug Day in the city, in honor of Nashville’s most famous canine. Doug’s owner thanked him and encouraged people to celebrate the holiday by “eating lots of pizza and chillin’ hard”. Coincidentally, May 20 is also National Rescue Dog Day, which encourages people to adopt dogs instead of buying them. Doug’s fame may help bring more attention to the cause.
