Innovation and Digital Technology Specialists’ Day in Tajikistan Date in the current year: April 21, 2026

Innovation and Digital Technology Specialists’ Day in Tajikistan Tajikistan celebrates Innovation and Digital Technology Specialists’ Day annually on April 21. This professional holiday was added to the country’s official list of holidays and observances in 2025.

Agriculture and the service sector play a leading role in Tajikistan’s economy, which is also heavily dependent on income from migrant workers in other countries, primarily Russia. In recent years, therefore, increasing attention has been paid to developing the country’s IT sector, which would help diversify the economy and better integrate Tajikistan into global economic and production processes.

The digital technology sector in Tajikistan is currently in the early stages of development and lags behind other countries in the region. This is due to a combination of factors, including the structure of Tajikistan’s economy, low incomes, expensive and slow internet connection, and an exodus of specialists. Although more and more IT professionals are graduating from Tajik universities each year, there are no jobs for them in Tajikistan. Consequently, graduates leave for other countries where it is easier to find work in the IT sector.

The most prominent part of Tajikistan’s digital industry is the telecommunications sector, which generates hundreds of millions of dollars annually and continues to grow. Although internet access in the country remains poor, the government has promised to expand coverage to 80% by 2028 (as of 2025, approximately half of Tajikistan’s population had internet access). As for startups, there are few of them as Tajikistan lacks a developed venture capital market and a stable flow of investment.

In recent years, the government of Tajikistan has been promoting the development of the IT industry to modernize the economy and shift its focus from agriculture to digital technologies and services. The country has strategic programs for developing the digital economy and artificial intelligence through 2040, and the period from 2025 to 2030 has been designated as the years of digital economy and innovation development.

Furthermore, the Agency for Innovation and Digital Technologies under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan was established in the spring of 2022. The agency is responsible for implementing digital solutions, supporting innovation, and developing the country’s IT sector and digital ecosystem, including through cooperation with international organizations.

The main digital technology development priorities in Tajikistan are e-government, digital services, and fintech. Some success has already been achieved in this area, as evidenced by the launch of the government services portal, ehukumat.tj. However, progress in these areas depends heavily on the growth of the telecommunications sector. Without affordable, high-speed internet connection, millions of people will lack access to digital services.

Tajikistan established Innovation and Digital Technologies Specialists’ Day to highlight the contributions of specialists involved in developing the IT sector and encourage high school graduates to pursue digital technology-related degrees.
