International Pillow Fight Day Date in the current year: April 4, 2026

International Pillow Fight Day International Pillow Fight Day is a fun annual holiday celebrated on the first Saturday in April. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a pillow fight with friends, no matter your age.

A pillow fight is an informal, usually playful activity in which participants hit one another with pillows. The pillows act as soft “weapons” in a mock fight that is not intended to cause serious harm. Pillow fights are usually viewed as a children’s activity that occurs during sleepovers, but in recent years they have become increasingly popular as an organized activity for people of all ages.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) occasionally staged pillow fight matches between female wrestlers between 2002 and 2008. In 2004, the Pillow Fight League (PFL) was founded in Toronto, ceasing operations in 2011. In 2021, brothers Steve and Paul Williams launched the Pillow Fight Championship (PFC). In addition, multiple pillow fight flash mobs have been held in cities around the world since the mid-2000s.

The first International Pillow Fight Day, also known as World Pillow Fight Day, took place on March 22, 2008. It was an international flash mob featuring coordinated pillow fights in 25 cities around the world. These pillow fights were presented as a fun communal activity rather than a serious competition. According to The Wall Street Journal, more than 5,000 people participated in the New York City flash mob alone. Multiple sources claimed that International Pillow Fight Day was the world’s largest flash mob to date.

After that, International Pillow Fight Day was held annually on the first Saturday in April. Every year, the holidays’s coordinator posted a list of planned public pillow fights so those who wanted to participate could find the closest event. International Pillow Fight Day was a decentralized, grassroots event: each local flash mob had its own organizers, and the global coordinators provided information about the events on the website and Facebook page.

In 2019, for example, pillow fights took place in Bilbao (Spain), Chicago (Illinois, US), Geleen (Netherlands), Hull (UK), Key West (Florida, US), New York City (New York, US), Oulu (Finland), Panama City (Panama), Scheveningen (Netherlands), Seattle (Washington, US), Vancouver (Canada), Valencia (Spain), Vienna (Austria), and Washington, D.C. (US).

However, in 2020, International Pillow Fight Day events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the event’s official website has gone offline, and its Facebook page hasn’t been updated. However, you can still celebrate the holiday even if there are no public pillow fights near you. Simply invite your friends over for a sleepover and have a pillow fight.

To ensure a fun pillow fight for everyone, follow these simple rules. First, only use soft, lightweight pillows without hard parts, such as zippers, buttons, or decorative beads. Second, remove your glasses before starting the fight. Third, don’t get carried away and swing lightly. Do not strike your opponent in the head and do not push or charge them. Your goal is to have fun, not beat your opponents down with a pillow.
