Younger Brothers’ Day in Japan Date in the current year: March 6, 2025

Younger Brothers’ Day in Japan Younger Brothers’ Day (Otouto no Hi), also known as Little Brothers’ Day, is celebrated annually in Japan on March 6 to honor the bond between younger brothers and their families. The celebration was started by manga artist and author Kunio Hatada in the early 1990s.

In addition to his work on manga, Hatada studied sibling relationships and even published several works on his research, including The Power of Younger Sisters: A Sociological Study. He discovered that many successful women in fields such as entertainment and sports were younger sisters, which inspired him to create a holiday to celebrate their achievements.

Hatada created Younger Sisters’ Day in 1991, choosing September 6 as the date for the new holiday. He then decided that other siblings deserved to be celebrated as well, and created three more holidays to observed at three-month intervals: Older Sisters’ Day on December 6, Younger Brothers’ Day on March 6, and Older Brothers’ Day on June 6.

Younger Brothers’ Day seems to be less popular than Younger Sisters’ Day; it is mainly celebrated by manga and anime fans who see it as an opportunity to celebrate iconic younger brothers in their favorite titles.

For example, Uchiha Sasuke, one of the main characters in the Naruto manga and anime series, has a complicated relationship with his older brother Itachi, to say the least. Itachi Uchiha massacred most of members of their clan before the events of the series, leaving Sasuke as one of the few survivors. This event deeply affected Sasuke, causing him to abandon his friends and home, develop a cold, distant personality, and vow to avenge his family’s death by killing Itachi.

Another iconic younger brother from anime and manga is Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist. When he and his older brother Edward attempted to revive their deceased mother using alchemy, Alphonse lost his body, and Edward sacrificed his right arm to attach his younger brother’s soul to a suit of armor. The series follows the brother’s journey in search of the philosopher’s stone, which would help them restore their bodies. Alphonse Elric is definitely one of the most popular younger brother characters in Japanese media.

Kei Tsukishima, one of the main characters in the volleyball-themed anime and manga series Haikyu!!, is the younger brother of Akiteru Tsukishima. Kei used to believe that Akiteru was a star volleyball player in high school, and it inspired Kei to take up volleyball as well. However, he eventually found out that Akiteru was actually a bench player. This deception put a strain on their relationship, but Akiteru continued to suppor Kei’s growth as a player, and the brothers eventually began to rebuild their relationship.

You can celebrate Younger Brothers’ Day no matter where you are, because younger brothers everywhere deserve recognition. If you have a younger brother, consider giving him a gift or card, sharing a meal, and reminiscing about your favorite moments. You can also post your favorite memories on social media using the hashtag #YoungerBrothersDay.
