State Courier Service Day in Ukraine Date in the current year: December 25, 2025

In Ukraine and some other former Soviet states, the State Courier Service is also known as the Feldjäger Service. The German term Feldjäger literally means “field hunter”, “field rifleman”, or “field ranger”. In the modern German armed forces, it refers to the military police, while in Russia, Ukraine, and some other countries that were formerly part of the Russian Empire, the term Feldjäger is applied to state couriers responsible for delivering sensitive information of state importance.

In Ukraine, the State Courier Service is part of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine (SSSCIP). The SSSCIP was established in 1998 as the Department of Special Telecommunication Systems and Information Protection of the Security Service of Ukraine and became an independent service directly under the president of Ukraine in 2006.

The State Courier Service of Ukraine was established on December 25, 1999 and became a part of the SSSCIP in 2011. The system of the State Courier Service is headed by the Main Directorate, which coordinates the activities of the units of the State Courier Service in regional centers.

The Main Directorate and regional subdivisions of the State Courier Service of Ukraine are tasked with providing state courier services to the President of Ukraine, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukrainian parliament), government agencies, local self-government bodies, military authorities and other legal entities in accordance with the law.

The service delivers correspondence of various classifications within Ukraine, as well as diplomatic mail to foreign countries. State couriers are armed military personnel who deliver sensitive correspondence that may contain state secrets. Their work is of the utmost importance, as even the smallest mistake can result in sensitive information falling into the wrong hands, with dire consequences for state security.

State Courier Service Day was created to highlight the importance of the service and to honor couriers who have distinguished themselves. It is celebrated on December 25 to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the State Courier Service Day. State Courier Service Day should not to be confused with State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection Day, which is celebrated on May 25.
