Green Monday Date in the current year: December 8, 2025

Green Monday Green Monday is one of many shopping-related days during the holiday shopping season. Held on the second Monday in December, it is the last day to place online orders that will arrive in time for Christmas.

It all started with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season and is associated with heavy discounts. Although Black Friday originated in the United States, it has since spread to many other countries, even though they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving.

In recent years, many other shopping days have emerged. For example, Small Business Saturday (the Saturday after Thanksgiving) was created to encourage shoppers to support small businesses, and Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving) was created to encourage people to shop online.

In 2007, the team at Shopping.com, a price comparison service owned by eBay, noticed that Cyber Monday was not the only spike in online shopping during the holiday season; there was another spike that occurred around the second Monday in December. After some internal research, they realized that this was the last day that shoppers could place online orders to arrive in time for Christmas.

In response to this trend, many online retailers began extending their deals beyond Cyber Monday to the second Monday in December. Dubbed Green Monday by eBay, it is also known by other names such as Cyber Monday 2 for its deals or Manic Monday for the chaotic nature of last-minute holiday shopping. The “green” in Green Monday may be a reference to the color of the dollar or to the supposedly more environmentally friendly nature of online shopping compared to traditional brick-and-mortar shopping.

Although Green Monday is less known to the general public than Black Friday or Cyber Monday, retailers use it as a marker for holiday sales, often offering discounts on “highly giftable items” such as small gadgets, video games, toys, and home items. It is used by large retailers such as Amazon, Target and Walmart, as well as smaller stores.

While Green Monday is less of a holiday and more of a marketing term, there are ways to observe it. It’s a great day to go over your gift list for items you haven’t crossed off, and to make some last-minute purchases to ensure they arrive in time for Christmas and you won’t have to run around crowded stores looking for replacement gifts. If you are planning to send gifts and care packages to friends and family who live out of state, this is also a good day to check holiday shipping deadlines to make sure your packages arrive before Christmas.
