Birthday of Crown Prince Christian of Denmark Date in the current year: October 15, 2024
Prince Christian has been Crown Prince of Denmark and the hair apparent to the Danish throne since his father’s ascension to the throne on January 14, 2024. He was born on October 15, 2005 to Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary (née Donaldson). To mark the his birth, 21-gun salutes were fried in the Port of Copenhagen and Helsingør (Elsinore). The prince was named Christian because Danish regnal names have alternated between Frederik and Christian since 1513.
The prince was baptized on January 21, 2006. Among his godparents are the Crown Prince of Greece, the Crown Princess of Sweden, and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Norway. On September 11, 2006, Prince Christian’s place in line of succession was officially confirmed. At the time, he was second in line to the throne, after his father.
Christian was the first member of the Danish royal family to attend kindergarten (his father had a nanny) and a public state school. He went to Tranegård School in Hellerup and also spent several weeks studying at Lemania-Verbier International School in Switzerland in early 2020. However, his studies in Switzerland were cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, the prince enrolled at Herlufsholm School, a private school in Næstved. However, after a 2022 documentary revealed evidence of bullying and abuse at the school, Christian transferred to Ordrup Gymnasium, a public school in Ordrup. He graduated in 2024.
Christian undertook his first official engagement when he wasn’t even three years old: in 2006, he accompanied his grandfather, Prince Henrik, to the opening of a new elephant house at the Copenhagen Zoo. He undertook various other engagements during the years that followed, but the official beginning of Christian’s royal duties was marked by his 18th birthday on October 15, 2023.
Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication on December 23, 2023. Christian’s father ascended to the Danish throne as King Frederik X on January 14, 2024, and Christian became Crown Prince of Denmark and the heir apparent to the throne. A little over two weeks later, Frederik made a three-day state visit to Poland; in his absence, Christian served as regent for the first time and even signed his first law.
The birthday of Prince Christian was added to the list of Denmark’s official flag flying days in 2023, once the prince turned 18 and came of age. The celebration of Christian’s 18th birthday included a changing of the guard at Amalienborg, during which the Prince made an appearance on the balcony of Frederik VIII’s palace together with his family, including his grandmother, Queen Margrethe II, followed by a gala dinner at Christianborg Palace. 200 young people were invited to the gala from all over the real, including Greenland and the Faeroe Islands.
