Border Troops in Soviet Russia were officially established by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars on May 28, 1918. Soviet Border Troops emerged after the creation of the Soviet Union in 1922. Each Soviet republic had its own border troops formations. Border Guards Day was first celebrated in 1958 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Soviet Border Troops.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, border troops formations in most newly independent republics were transformed into border services of the respective states. Some countries chose to change the date of Border Guards Day, but Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan continued to celebrate it on May 28.
Border Guards Day is celebrated both by active service and former border guards. Former border guards traditionally mark their professional holiday by boisterous gatherings, while active servicemen attend official events.Remind me with Google Calendar
