Border Guard Day in Russia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan Date in the current year: May 28, 2024

Border Guard Day in Russia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan Border Guard Day is an annual professional observance celebrated in some former Soviet republics (namely Russia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan) on May 28. It commemorates the establishment of the Soviet Border Troops in 1918.

Border troops in Soviet Russia were officially established by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars on May 28, 1918. The Soviet Border Troops emerged after the creation of the Soviet Union in 1922. Each Soviet republic had its own border troops formations. Border Guard Day was first celebrated in 1958 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Soviet Border Troops.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, border troops formations in most newly independent republics were transformed into border services of the respective states. Some countries chose to change the date of Border Guard Day, but Russia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan continued to celebrate it on May 28.

Border Guard Day is celebrated both by active service and former border guards. Former border guards traditionally mark their professional holiday by boisterous gatherings, while active servicemen attend official events.
