Standardization and Metrology Employees Day in Tajikistan Date in the current year: May 25, 2024

Standardization and Metrology Employees Day in Tajikistan Standardization and Metrology Employees Day is an official professional holiday in Tajikistan, celebrated annually on May 25. Like the rest of the country’s professional observances, it was established by the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On Holidays”.

Metrology and standardization are crucial for ensuring compatibility, interoperability, repeatability, safety and quality at both national and international levels. Metrology is concerned with measurement; each country has a national measurement system implemented through a network of labs, calibration facilities and accreditation authorities that make up its metrology infrastructure. Standardization is the process of developing and implementing technical standards. Standardization and metrology are closely related to each other because the development and implementation of standards would be impossible without a measurement system.

Each country has its standardization and metrology authorities. The history of the modern metrological service in Tajikistan dates back to 1926, when the government of the Tajik SSR ordered the establishment of the permanent verification department of the Main Chamber of Weights and Measures in Stalinabad (now Dushanbe). Three years later, it was replaced by the State (National) Chamber of Weights of Measures of the Tajik SSR.

During the subsequent years, the agency was reorganized several times before becoming what it is now – the Agency of Standardization, Metrology, Certification and Trade Inspection under the government of the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajikstandard). The main task of Tajikstandard is the creation and maintenance of the State Standards Fund and the National Registry of Measuring Instruments, but it also has a number of other functions, each of which is the responsibility of a particular department, inspection, committee or laboratory.

Tajikstandard consists of the Affairs and Rights Department, Technical Regulation and Standardization Department, Metrology Department, Conformity Assessment Department, Trade Inspection, Cotton and Silk Products Inspection, Technical Regulations Department, technical committees, and Testing Laboratory of Food and Agricultural Products.

The structure of Tajikstandard also includes a number of subordinate organizations, including two standardization, metrology, certification and trade inspection centers, two standardization, metrology, certification and trade inspection departments, and ten regional test centers.

Employees of Tajikstandard and its subordinate organizations, as well as other professionals in the field of standardization and metrology celebrate their professional holiday on May 25. Like all other professional observances in Tajikistan, Standardization and Metrology Employees Day is not a non-working holiday unless it falls on a weekend. When it does, festive events are usually held on the closest weekday.

Tajikistan is not the only former Soviet republic to celebrate Standardization and Metrology Employees Day. This professional holiday is also observed in Ukraine on October 10 and in Kyrgyzstan on October 24.
