National Siamese Cat Day Date in the current year: April 6, 2024
The Siamese cat is one of the first distinctly recognized Asian cat breeds. It is derived from the Wichienmaat, also known as the Thai or Classic / Traditional / Old-Style Siamese cat. The first description of the breed can be found in the Treatise on Cats (Tamra Maew), a manuscript believed to have originated sometime during the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351–1767).
The first documented Siamese cat to be brought to the United States was sent by the American consul in Bangkok to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878. Six years later, British biologist Lilian James Gould was given a pair of Siamese cats, named Mia and Pho, as a gift from her brother Edward, who served as a British consul in Bangkok at the time. Lilian became one of the first Siamese cat breeders in Europe and co-founded the Siamese Cat Club in 1901.
The modern breed standard with its elongated and muscular body, triangular head, almond-shaped eyes, large ears and pointed pattern developed in the mid-20th century. Siamese cats are popular among cat lovers due to being very intelligent and affectionate. Their behavior is often described as dog-like because Siamese cats tend to be very playful and active even as adults.
Sometimes described as “extroverts”, most Siamese cats are social creatures that enjoy spending time with other cats and people, and would often bond strongly with one family member. They can even suffer from separation anxiety or depression when left alone for long periods of time. Because of this, Siamese cats are often bought or adopted in pairs so they can keep each other company.
National Siamese Cat Day is one of many holidays created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, a freelance author and editor known as the “Queen of Holidays”. An avid cat lover, Shoemaker-Galloway created National Siamese Cat Day in 2014 to celebrate these beautiful and intelligent creatures. The holiday also aims to raise awareness of millions of neglected cats that are waiting to be adopted from shelters.
The best way to celebrate National Siamese Cat Day is to adopt an abandoned Siamese cat from a shelter instead of buying one. However, we understand that this option is not for everyone because adopting a pet is a decision that should not be taken lightly. You shouldn’t get a pet if you are not sure you can take care of it.
Luckily, there are other ways to honor Siamese cats on National Siamese Cat Day. You can learn interesting facts about this breed and share them with anyone who is willing to listen, donate to or volunteer at your local cat rescue, watch cute Siamese cat videos on YouTube or TikTok, and spread the word about a holiday with the hashtags #NationalSiameseCatDay and #SiameseCatDay.
If you’re a proud Siamese cat owner, you can celebrate the holiday by buying your pet a new toy or treat, spending some extra time playing or cuddling with your furry companion, and sharing adorable photos and videos of your cat on social media.
