Global Movie Day Date in the current year: February 10, 2024
The art of cinema hasn’t been around for long in the grand scheme of things, but it has definitely captured our hearts and minds. Movies connect people from all over the world, giving them a unique opportunity to learn about different cultures without leaving the comfort of their homes, and help foster tolerance and understanding.
One of the world’s leading organizations that advance the art and science of filmmaking is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences founded in 1927. It is best known for its annual awards ceremony known as the Academy Awards or the Oscars. Although the Academy is based in the United States, it is an international professional organization consisting of nearly 10,000 film professionals (actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, film editors, etc.) from around the world.
The Academy Awards are given for artistic and technical excellence in the American and international film industry, with a focus on the American film industry. They are regarded as one of the most prestigious film awards in the world, as well as one of the four major awards in the American entertainment industry, alongside the Emmy Awards for television, the Grammy Awards for music, and the Tony Awards for theatre.
The annual Academy Awards ceremony generates significant media and public attention, but its viewership has steadily declined over the past years. In an attempt to engage the audience and get people more interested in the nominees, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences established Global Movie Day.
The main goal of the holiday is to celebrate the art of cinema and give film fans from around the globe an opportunity to engage with filmmakers and Academy members via social media. The inaugural celebration was held the day before the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony, and what a ceremony it turned out to be! That year, the South Korean film Parasite directed by Bong Jon-ho became the first non-English language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate Global Movie Day. You can participate in one of the events held by the Academy, host a movie night for your friends and family or rewatch your favorite movies on your own, go to the movies with your significant other, watch as many Oscar-winning films as you can or focus on Oscar-nominated performances of your favorite actors.
By the way, watching movies is not the only way to celebrate Global Movie Day. You can play a movie trivia game, join a movie club, learn interesting facts about your favorite actors and filmmakers or about the history of cinema in general, share lines from your favorite movies or your favorite movie posters on social media, and spread the word about the holiday with the hashtag #GlobalMovieDay.
