Navy Day | Sea and River Fleet Day in Ukraine Date in the current year: July 7, 2024
Sea and River Fleet Day was originally established by the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk in 1993. In 2006, President Viktor Yushchenko additionally established Navy Day. Two years later, Yushchenko decided to merge two holidays and created Ukrainian Fleet Day. The new professional holiday was celebrated on the first Sunday in July.
In 2011, president Viktor Yanykovych moved the celebration of Fleet Day to the last Sunday in July so that it would coincide with Russian Navy Day. Finally, Petro Poroshenko canceled Yanukovych's decree in 2015. He divided Fleet Day into two holidays again. Both Sea and River Fleet Day and Navy Day are celebrated on the first Sunday in July.
The reestablishment of Navy Day in Ukraine is regarded as the first step in reformation of the Ukrainian Naval Forces. The country's navy was severely affected by the Crimean Crisis, as it lost majority of its units. However Ukraine is determined to rebuilt its naval forces. The remaining naval forces were relocated from Crimea to the ports of Odessa and Mariupol.
