Heroes of Fatherland Day in Russia Date in the current year: December 9, 2016

Heroes of Fatherland Day in Russia Heroes of Fatherland Day is a relatively new memorial day, that was initiated by the government of Russia and approved by president in 2007. This memorial day is annually observed on December 9 to commemorate the heroes of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation and the recipients of the Order of St. George and the Order of Glory.

The alike tradition had existed in Russia before the 1917 October Revolution, when the power was seized by the Bolshevik party. The decision was made to revive the holiday and keep the same date, that is December 9. It's believed, that celebration of this holiday commemorates the fallen heroes, honors the living recipients of the Orders and contributes the shaping of the selfless service to the Fatherland. By the way, originally the holiday was created on the anniversary of the establishment of the Order of St. George by Empress Catherine II.

The present-day memorial day Heroes of Fatherland Day is a working holiday, unless it falls on the weekend. The appropriate festive events are organized only for the military.
