Economist Day in Russia Date in the current year: November 11, 2024
The term “economist” refers to a practitioner in the social science discipline of economics. In Russia, it is applied both to scientists whose scientific interests lie in the field of economics and to economics graduates working in various related spheres, from marketing to finance.
Russian economists used to observe their professional holiday unofficially on June 30. In 2011, the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation officially established Financier’s Day (September 8), a holiday for economists working in the financial sphere. Since 2015, all Russian economists have celebrated their own professional day on November 11.
The date of the holiday was chosen to commemorate the establishment of the Imperial Free Economic Society on November 11, 1765. The Society was founded by Catherine the Great to facilitate the development of the country’s economy. The present-day Free Economic Society of Russia is one of the country’s leading civic institution whose work serves the development of applied economic thought.
