Day of Libraries in Ukraine Date in the current year: September 30, 2024

Day of Libraries in Ukraine Day of Libraries is an annual Ukrainian holiday celebrated on September 30. It was officially established in 1998 by the second President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma.

The first libraries on the territory of present-day Ukraine began to emerge shortly after the baptism of Kievan Rus. Currently, there are over 40,000 libraries in Ukraine. The leading libraries in the country are: Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine, National Library of Ukraine for Children, National Historical Library of Ukraine, etc.

Leonid Kuchma established the holiday dedicated to libraries in order to raise public awareness of the importance of libraries as providers of unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. Day of Libraries also can be regarded as the professional holiday of all library employees.

Day of Libraries in Ukraine is marked with numerous cultural events held in libraries throughout the country. These events focus on recognizing the contribution of Ukrainian libraries to the development of education, science, and culture in Ukraine. They also aim to encourage further enhancement of the role of libraries in Ukrainian society and raise awareness of the issues libraries have to face.
