Prince Joachim is the younger son of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Consort Henrik. He was born on June 7, 1969. In order to expand his business experience, Prince Joachim worked for the A.P. Moller–Maersk Group, a business conglomerate that has activities in a variety of business sectors, from 1993 to 1995. Currently, he owns and runs forestry and farming operations. He is patron of many national foundations, institutions and organizations.

Prince Joachim has been married twice. In 1995, he married Alexandra Christina Manley. They have two sons, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix. The couple separated in 2004 and finalized the divorce in 2005. Three years later, Prince Joachim married Marie Cavallier. The couple also has two children, a son and a daughter (Prince Henrik and Princess Athena).
