Prince Joachim is the younger son of Queen Margrethe II and the younger brother of King Frederik X. He was born on June 7, 1969 in Copenhagen. Upon graduating from school in 1986, Joachim began military education as a recruit in the Queen's Life Regiment. From 1991 to 1993, he studied agrarian economics at Den Classenske Agerbrugskole Næsgaard.

In order to expand his business experience, Prince Joachim worked for the A.P. Moller–Maersk Group, a business conglomerate that has activities in a variety of business sectors, from 1993 to 1995. Currently, he owns and runs forestry and farming operations. He is patron of many national foundations, institutions, and organizations. In 2023, Prince Joachim moved to Washington, D.C. to work as defense industry attaché at the Danish Embassy.

Prince Joachim has been married twice. In 1995, he married Alexandra Christina Manley. They have two sons, Count Nikolai and Count Felix. The couple separated in 2004 and finalized the divorce in 2005. Three years later, Prince Joachim married Marie Cavallier. The couple also has two children, a son and a daughter (Count Henrik and Countess Athena).

Following the ascension of his brother to the Danish throne in 2024, Prince Joachim became the fifth in the line of succession to the Danish throne, following King Frederik's four children.
