When her parents divorced, she moved to Switzerland with her mother, where she attended a boarding school.

After graduating from school, Marie studied international business and economics in the United States and economics in Switzerland. During her years in college, she worked for Estée Lauder and ING Numismatic Group SA. After graduation, she worked in advertising in the US, France, and Switzerland.

Prince Joachim of Denmark separated from his first wife in September 2004. The couple divorced in April 2005, and four months later Joachim was first spotted with Marie in Avignon, France. By January 2007, Marie had met Joahim’s children from his first marriage, and they went on a ski holiday in Switzerland together. Later that year, Marie was introduced to Queen Margrethe II during Easter celebration at Marselisborg Palace, the Queen’s summer residence.

The couple became officially engaged on October 3, 2007 and married on on May 24, 2008. Prince Joachim and Princess Marie have two children together, Count Henrik and Countess Athena. Princess Marie is also stepmother to her husband’s sons from his first marriage, Count Nikolai and Count Felix.

Interestingly, Princess Marie’s birthday is right after the birthday of Queen consort Mary, the wife of King Frederik X and Marie’s sister-in-law.
