4 Ingredients to Avoid in Products for Acne-Prone Skin
It’s no coincidence that acne-prone skin is sometimes referred to as problem skin; people with this skin type often find it tricky to make their face look healthy and blemish-free. In an attempt to combat acne, they use skincare products with alcohol and other harsh ingredients that do more harm than good. Here’s our list of ingredients to avoid in products for acne-prone skin.
Ethyl Alcohol (Ethanol)
There are may alcohols that are used in cosmetics, but most consumers associate the word “alcohol” with ethanol. This chemical compound is a common antiseptic and disinfectant used in medicine and cosmetics. It does prevent inflammation in people with acne-prone skin, but it also dries the skin and makes it produce more sebum, which leads to clogged pores and more acne. Spot treatments with alcohol are okay, but you shouldn’t apply alcohol-based products all over your face.

Exfoliating Beads
All skin types, including acne-prone skin, need exfoliation because this procedure helps get rid of dead cells, excess skin oil and impurities that clog your pores. While choosing a face scrub for acne-prone skin, you should keep in mind that scrubs with plastic microbeads can damage the skin and cause inflammation, making your condition worse. You should opt for gentle exfoliants, such as Ayurvedic ubtans or chemical peels with low concentrations of alpha-hydroxy acids.

Most Vegetable Oils
Vegetable oils can be found in many facial moisturizers because of their humectant and emollient properties. Unfortunately, a lot them are comegodenic, i.e. they can clog pores and make breakouts worse. There are some vegetable oils that are considered safe for acne-prone skin, like baobab oil or chia seed oil, but you should avoid heavier oils such as shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, mango seed butter, etc.

Mineral Oil
Mineral oil is a petroleum derivative that is used in cosmetics as an inexpensive alternative to vegetable oils. It prevents moisture loss from the skin, as well as makes it softer and smoother. Unfortunately, it is also believed to clog pores and prevent your skin from being able to breathe, meaning that this ingredient may cause your skin to break out. Although highly refined and purified mineral oil may be non-comedogenic, it’s hard to be sure whether particular manufacturer uses top quality ingredients, so it’s better to avoid this ingredient altogether.
