The Mobile Motion Film Festival was conceived in 2014 by cinema enthusiast and PR specialist Andrea Holle. She started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for her brainchild. The campaign turned out successful and the first edition of MoMo took place on May 30, 2015 in Zurich.
Why did Holle decide to focus on digital filmmaking? According to her and her team, cinema is often considered an elitist kind of creative art because it is expensive and time consuming. Aspiring filmmakers with limited resources often don’t have an opportunity to learn the craft and master their skills.
However, digital filmmaking technology gets cheaper, easier and more accessible each year and the Internet provides virtually unlimited opportunities for learning. This gives young and aspiring filmmakers a unique chance to hone their talent and technique and to demonstrate their creativity to a wide audience.
The main goal of the Mobile Motion Film Festival is to discover and support up-and-coming filmmakers who might not have access to expensive equipment and impressive budgets but have a fresh, unique and open approach to filmmaking. MoMo is designed as a platform for those who think that talent, creativity and hard work are much more important in filmmaking than multimillion budgets and industry connections.
The Mobile Motion Film Festival is open for short films in any languages shot entirely on a smartphone, tablet, GoPro, or any other mobile device. The festival jury chooses the best films and presents awards in several categories including Grand Jury Prize, Young Talent, Best Swiss Film, Best Fiction, Best Documentary / MoJo, Best Music Video, Best Animation / Stop Motion, and Best Spanchat Short. There’s also the Audience Award whose winner is chosen by attendees.
