Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetics inspired by the 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history setting where steam power has maintained mainstream usage, although this is not always the case.
Steampunk design and fashion are heavily influenced by the Victorian era and tend to resemble retrofuturism. Steampunk-influenced outfits often feature corsets, gowns, bustles, petticoats, suits with waistcoats, top hats, bowler hats and etc., often combined with “period” accessories. Modern accessories can be modified to look like they have come from the Victorian era.
The first steampunk convention named SalonCon was held in 2006. Since then, a number of steampunk conventions have appeared all over the world. In addition, steampunk has become a regular feature at pop culture conventions and Renaissance festivals. In 2013, Ukraine joined the countries that have their own steampunk conventions.
The inaugural KyivSteamCon was held in September 2013 under the name Express Kyiv-Neverland. Since then, the festival has been held every fall at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. According to the organizers, the convention is the best place to learn more about the genre that has developed from a subgenre of cyberpunk into an entire subculture.
The programming of KyivSteamCon includes lectures, discussions, workshops, film screenings, cosplay, stage performances, historic dance, meetings with authors, tabletop games, tarot readings, contests and tournaments, and a fair where attendees can buy unique handmade items and steampunk-themed merchandise. There is no dress code, but steampunk-inspired attire is always welcome.
