In the City was founded in 2012 by Seed Experiences. This company is known for its signature event held in Capetown, Rocking the Daisies, which has become a highlight of the South African live music experience. Rocking the Daisies and In the City usually take place on the same weekend and often feature the same headliner. Johannesburg and Capetown were chosen as host cities intentionally. These are two of the largest cities in South Africa that are located on the opposite sides of the country. Thus, music fans can choose whichever city is closer and enjoy live music experience there.
The inaugural In the City was a huge success. All 10,000 tickets were sold out. The festival was headlined by English indie rock band Bloc Party. The line-up also included South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord, South African rapper Tumi Molekane and English hip hop turntablist DJ Yoda.
Originally In the City was a one-day event. Due to its increasing popularity, the organizers expanded it in 2016. Now the festival lasts three days and is known as In the City Weekend. Currently, the festival consists of three separate events for fans of house, electronic, hip-hop, urban, indie and everything in between. Besides, there is a string of lead-up events held throughout Johannesburg and Pretoria to build up attendees’ stamina for a full weekend of unforgettable musical experience.
The first day of In the City Weekend features a large-scale dance party for those who love quality dance music. During the second day, a part of the city center transforms into a tropical beach complete with palm trees and beach sand. Party goers come dressed in their brightest summer outfits to enjoy exotic cocktails and good music. Finally, the third day culminates in the concert that takes place in the heart of Jozi parks, Emmarentia Dam. The concert has an incredible international line-up that includes award-winning musicians.
