Adelaide Writers’ Week is the largest free literary festival in Australia and one of the world’s most significant literary events. It has been held in the South Australian capital of Adelaide since 1960. Adelaide Writers’ Week is a traditional part of the Adelaide Festival.

Adelaide Writers’ Week is the largest and most internationally respected writers’ festival in Australia. Despite its name, it isn’t an industry-only event. The festival offers both authors and book lovers a unique opportunity to share literary explorations and ideas in a beautiful setting. Writers from all over the world come to Adelaide to connect with their readers as well as to interact with their colleagues from different countries in the city’s picturesque Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden.

Adelaide Writers’ Week is a six-day festival filled with free panel discussions, lectures, readings, and meetings with authors. All events are presented live in the gardens and then made available online via podcast for those who couldn’t attend. There’s also a series of ticketed special events held throughout the year. Another popular event organized by the team of Adelaide Writers’ Week is Kids’ Weekend, a free event designed for kids of all ages.

Over more than half a century, Adelaide Writers’ Week has been attended by some of the world’s greatest writers, poets, artists and thinkers. Past guests have included Isabel Allende (Chile), Margaret Atwood (Canada), Ruth Rendell (UK), Neal Stephenson (USA), Michael Cunningham (USA), Val McDermid (UK), Vikram Seth (India), Alexander McCall Smith (UK), Elizabeth Gilbert (USA), Richard Dawkins (UK), Madeleine Thien (Canada), Tatjana Soli (USA), and others. The festival welcomes both fiction and non-fiction authors.

Adelaide Writers’ Week is known for its informal and relaxed atmosphere which makes it easy to engage in conversation about literature, poetry, politics, current events and so much more. Renowned authors from all over the world interact with their readers and share valuable tips with their less seasoned colleagues.
