Zythos is a Belgian association of beer lovers. It is a member of the European Beer Consumers Union. The association founded its beer festival in 2004 in order to popularize Belgian beer and support the country’s brewing industry. The Zythos Beer Festival took place in Sint-Niklaas from 2004 to 2011. Leuven has been the host city since 2012.
The Zythos Beer Festival offers a unique chance to sample over 500 Belgian beers and to meet their creators in a friendly and relaxed environment. The festival features several dozen breweries and beer companies recognized by Zythos, offering their finest beers. The list of beers is released in advance to give attendees an idea of what to expect.
Like most beer festivals, the ZBF has a token system. Entrance to the festival is free but attendees that wish to taste the beers are required to buy a Start Package containing a specially designed 10 cl tasting glass and 5 tokens. A glass of beer costs one token regardless of its style or alcohol content. Additional tokens can be purchased at special stands. Besides, members of Zythos or the European Beer Consumers Union get 2 free tokens.
Along with beer stands and booths, the festival features a food corner where you can find appetizers, Belgian delicacies, pizza & pasta, sandwiches, warm drinks and refreshments. Entertainment includes live music and meetings with beer writers from different countries.
The ZBF presents two awards. The Consumer Trophy is handed to the best beer as voted by the attendees. The Nicest Booth award is presented to one of the exhibitors by the jury consisting of selected members of Zythos and local dignitaries.
