The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is an annual Renaissance festival held at Mount Hope Estate and Winery in Manheim, Pennsylvania. The event runs over 13 weekends from early August through late October and attracts about 250,000 attendees each season.

The original Mount Hope Estate was the home and center of operations of the Grubb Family Iron Dynasty during the 19th century. After the last descendant of the Grubb family passed away, the mansion was purchased by Charles Romito, who converted it into a winery in 1980. To promote his new business, Romito hosted several events, including a classical orchestra concert, a bluegrass concert, an art show, and a jousting tournament.

The jousting tournament took place in the parking lot of the winery in 1980. The event was such a success that Romito decided to organize a two-day Renaissance fair the following year. Over the years, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire has become one of Pennsylvania’s most popular festivals.

The Faire is set in the fictional English shire of Mount Hope during the reign of the Tudor dynasty. It features a recreation of a 16th-century village with authentic Tudor buildings and a replica of the Globe Theater associated with William Shakespeare. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire offers over 90 stage shows daily on 12 stages, 22 Royal Kitchens, and artisan merchants selling unique handcrafted items. Hundreds of costumed characters interact with attendees, creating an authentic atmosphere and keeping everyone entertained.

Entertainment at the Faire includes musical performances, Shakespearean plays, jousting, human chess, fire shows, dancing, comedy, archery, acrobats, living history events and activities, falconry, workshops, special events for children, contests and competitions, and more. Merchants sell handcrafted wares you won’t find anywhere else, while food vendors offer an endless array of authentic 16th century foods and traditional treats, from turkey legs and Scotch eggs to chocolate covered bacon.

Like most other Renaissance festivals, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire hosts themed weekends. Each weekend throughout the season showcases a unique theme that offers an exciting experience. In 2017, themed weekends included Children’s Fantasy, World Carnival, Celtic Weekend, Myths & Legends, Heroes of the Realm, Wizarding Weekend, Pirate Invasion, Time Travelers, Oktoberfest, Autumn Harvest, and Halloween Daze & Spooky Knights.
