Novi is located between Detroit and Ann Arbor, two of the largest cities in the state of Michigan, which makes it a great location for a multi-genre fan convention. Before there was the Motor City Comic Con, Michigan had hosted a number of other multi-genre conventions including the Detroit Triple Fan Fair (held from 1965 to 1978) and the King Con (held from 1982 to 1986). Both conventions took place in Detroit.
The Motor City Comic Con (MCCC) was created by Michael Goldman who brought on Gary Bishop to manage the inaugural convention. The first show was held in 1989 at the Dearborn Civic Center. It attracted over 2,500 attendees. The convention has grown over the years. Today, its current attendance is over 50,000. The show takes place at the Suburban Collection Showplace.
Although MCCC primarily focuses on comic books, it features other pop culture elements and genres including science fiction and fantasy, cinema and television, anime and manga, animation and video games, professional wrestling, toys and collectible card games, horror and webcomics, and more. There’s something here for everyone!
The convention’s programming includes panels, seminars and workshops featuring comic book professionals, portfolio review sessions with top video game companies and comic book publishers, exclusive previews of upcoming feature films, gaming tournaments, a costume contest, and other events and activities on all aspects of pop culture.
MCCC has a large exhibition space for hundreds of vendors and exhibitors including leading film studios and television networks, comic book publishers, collectibles merchants, comic book dealers, and others. There’s an Autograph Area for autograph sessions and photo-ops with celebrity guests, an Artists’ Alley, and more.
Each edition of the Motor City Comic Con features comic guests and media guests (primarily actors known for their roles in science fiction/fantasy/superhero films and television series). For example, the media guest line-up at the 2015 convention included William Shatner (Star Trek), Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk), Linda Blair (The Exorcist), Billy Boyd (The Lord of the Rings film trilogy), Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman), Robert Englund (the Nightmare on Elm Street film series), and other well-known actors.
