The Atlantic Balloon Fiesta was founded in 1985 by a group of people from the local community who wanted to extend the tourist season by hosting a hot air balloon event. They invited balloonists to the area for a weekend. Although the first event was quite informal, it proved to be a success, so it was decided to host the festival every summer.
To keep people interested even when the hot air balloons were not flying, the organizers added a lot of new in the air and on ground activities such as helicopter rides, skydiving demonstrations, children’s games and activities, a Craft Fair, an Antique and Classic Car Show & Shine, continuous live entertainment, and more.
The Atlantic Balloon Fiesta is held on the weekend after the Canadian Labor Day. Of course, most attendees are drawn by bright hot air balloons that take off twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. Each festival features about 40 balloons, including special shapes. Attendees can book paid balloon rides onsite. To welcome balloonists, many homes and businesses in the Sussex area dig out their white Christmas like and decorate.
Along with balloon flights, there’s something for everyone at the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta. For example, the Craft Fair that runs the entire weekend features over 70 crafters from all over Atlantic Canada, offering unique handmade crafts. The Car Show & Shine features over 500 vehicles, from antique cars to trucks and bikes. The Superstore Bandstand features continuous live entertainment for visitors of all ages.
Additional activities at the festival include the Fiesta Fun Run (a 5k race), K9 performances, athletic performances, circus performances, parades, Lofty's Teddy Bear Picnic, and many more!
