Mechanical Engineer's Day in Ukraine Date in the current year: September 22, 2024

Mechanical Engineer's Day in Ukraine Mechanical Engineer's Day is a professional holiday in Ukraine celebrated on the fourth Sunday in September. It was officially established by President Leonid Kravchuk in 1993, but the history of the holiday begins during the Soviet era.

Mechanical Engineer's Day was originally established by the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union in 1980 to recognize the contribution of mechanical engineers to the development of the country's industry. As heavy industry was the main focus of the economy of the USSR, the profession of mechanical engineer was regarded as very important. The holiday was celebrated on the last Sunday in September.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, some former Soviet republic abolished the holiday or moved it to another date. Ukraine was one of the latter: Mechanical Engineer's Day in Ukraine is currently celebrated on the fourth Sunday in September.

Machine building is one of the leading industries of Ukrainian economy. Ukrainian machine building companies contribute about 10% of the county's GDP (as of 2011), producing machinery and equipment for virtually all kinds of industrial activities. The majority of companies are located in Eastern Ukraine.
