Fountain Pen Day Date in the current year: November 6, 2026
Fountain Pen Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday in November. Created in 2012, the holiday was launched to promote the use of fountain pens in our increasingly digital world.Fountain pens evolved from dip pens. Both types of pens had metal nibs, but dip pens required repeated dipping into an inkwell. Fountain pens, however, had an internal reservoir filled with water-based ink, eliminating the need for repeated dipping and simplifying the writing process.
Although there is evidence of early fountain pen prototypes in the Fatimid Caliphate and Renaissance Europe, they did not become reliable until the early 19th century. The era of mass-produced fountain pens began in the 1880s, gradually replacing dip pens. Fountain pens remained dominant throughout the first half of the 20th century, but were eventually replaced by ballpoint pens for everyday use. Today, fountain pens are primarily considered luxury items, status symbols, collectibles, and tools for calligraphy, ink art, and professional design.
Cary Yeager of Kenro Industries, a company specializing in the distribution of luxury fountain pens, created Fountain Pen Day in 2012. One day in June, Yeager learned of National Ballpoint Pen Day. He was surprised that there was a holiday dedicated to ballpoint pens and disappointed that there wasn’t one for fountain pens.
He then reached out to fellow fountain pen enthusiasts at The Fountain Pen Network, one of the largest online communities dedicated to fountain pens and related items, such as inks, papers, notebooks, and wax seals. After several months of discussions, the community decided on an early November date, as it falls after Halloween and before Thanksgiving. They chose Friday so that you can bring your fountain pens to work, show them off to your coworkers, and still have a whole weekend to celebrate with other fountain pen enthusiasts.
The first Fountain Pen Day was celebrated on November 2, 2012. According to estimates, approximately 49 vendors and 600 participants took part in the celebration. Since then, Fountain Pen Day has grown significantly, bringing together fountain pen enthusiasts, collectors, manufacturers, and retailers from around the world. The holiday encourages people to rediscover handwriting in an increasingly digital world and to try using fountain pens in their daily lives.
Fountain Pen Day is widely recognized in the industry. Many fountain pen manufacturers and stationery shops support the holiday, including large corporations and independent retailers. They use the occasion to introduce new products, organize special promotions, and offer gifts or discounts to customers.
While industry participation is an important part of Fountain Pen Day, the holiday is largely community-driven. It encourages fountain pen collectors and users to discuss their favorite pen models and inks, exchange tips, share pictures of their collections and handwriting on social media, and organize meetups and other events. If you want to splurge on a new pen and ink for the occasion, that’s great, but you don’t have to purchase anything to participate in Fountain Pen Day. The day is about sharing your love for fountain pens and handwriting in any way you can.
