Pumpkin Bread Day Date in the current year: October 30, 2026
Pumpkin Bread Day, sometimes referred to as National Pumpkin Bread Day, is celebrated annually on October 30, right before Halloween. It is the perfect occasion to bake a loaf of delicious pumpkin bread.Pumpkin bread is a type of moist, cake-like quick bread, similar to banana bread, carrot bread, and zucchini bread. Its history can be traced back to baked goods made by early colonists who used nutritious, widely available pumpkin to stretch scarce and expensive flour supplies.
The first pumpkin bread recipes began appearing in cookbooks in the first half of the 19th century. These recipes covered several types of baked goods, ranging from relatively plain flat cakes made with cornmeal to yeast-risen breads. However, modern pumpkin bread did not begin to develop until the mid-19th century, as quick breads are made with chemical leaveners rather than yeast or sourdough starters, and chemical leaveners, such as baking soda, did not become widespread in the United States until around that time.
As quick breads became more common, pumpkin bread evolved into its current form: a moist, sweet loaf made with wheat flour, pumpkin, sugar, eggs, fat, and a chemical leavening agent. No one is credited with inventing modern pumpkin bread. Rather, it was a gradual transition. Over time, spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves became common additions to the batter. Some bakers also add raisins, nuts, or, more recently, chocolate chips.
Pumpkin bread was originally a seasonal dish made during and after the pumpkin harvest. Today, it is usually made with canned pumpkin purée, which is available year-round. Nevertheless, pumpkin bread is still associated with fall in the United States, especially the period around Halloween and Thanksgiving.
A lot of food days have murky origins, but Pumpkin Bread Day is not one of them. The holiday was created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, the self-described “Queen of Holidays”, who wanted to encourage people to get into the spirit of Halloween by baking some delicious homemade pumpkin bread.
If you want to join the celebration, here’s a simple recipe for you to try. Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, combine 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), 1 tsp baking soda, ¾ tsp salt, 2 tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground nutmeg, ¼ tsp ground cloves, and ¼ tsp ground ginger. Whisk together and set aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, ¾ cup brown sugar, and ½ cup granulated sugar until combined. Whisk in 1 ½ cups canned or fresh pumpkin purée, ½ cup vegetable oil, and ¼ cup orange juice or milk. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix together. Then you may gently fold in chocolate chips, raisins, or nuts, if you wish.
Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan, pour the batter into the pan, and bake for about an hour. Halfway through the baking time, loosely cover the loaf with aluminum foil. The baking time may vary depending on your oven, so begin checking the bread with a toothpick around 55 minutes in. Let the bread cool completely on a wire rack before removing it from the pan and slicing.
