International Decora Day Date in the current year: July 25, 2026
International Decora Day is celebrated annually on the last Saturday in July. It is dedicated to a Japanese street fashion style characterized by an abundance of colorful accessories.Decora (short for “decoration”), also called Decora-kei (“decora style”) is a distinct fashion style that emerged in Tokyo’s Harajuku district, known as a gathering place for fans of Japanese street fashion, in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
One of the main inspirations for the Decora style was Tomoe Shinohara, a singer and actress who rose to prominence as an idol in the mid-1990s. She was known for her bubbly personality and flamboyant fashion style, which included layered clothes in bright primary colors, crumpled socks, bright makeup, inexpensive glittery accessories, and childish hats.
Shinohara’s fans, known as the “Shinora”, often tried to emulate her style while maintaining a certain level of originality. Some of them were featured in the iconic FRUiTS magazine, which showcased Harajuku street style. The magazine is also credited with coining the term “Decora”.
Unlike some other Japanese street fashion styles, Decora does not focus on specific silhouettes or garments. Outfits are often layered but basic, consisting of a T-shirt or hoodie and a tutu-like miniskirt. Some wearers stick to monochromatic clothing in bright/neon primary colors such as pink, blue, yellow, and red, while others prefer clothing with colorful prints and patterns. However, in the Decora style, clothes are secondary to accessories.
An excess of colorful accessories is the defining principle of Decora, which sets it apart from other Japanese street fashion styles. Fans of the style wear dozens of accessories, including hair clips, bows, barrettes, headbands, plastic bracelets, watches, rings, necklaces, charms, bright bags or backpacks covered in pins and keychains, belts, bright tights, knee socks, leg and arm warmers, patterned face masks, sunglasses in bright plastic frames, and bright wigs. Colorful makeup and face stickers/band-aids are also common. The result is a deliberately overwhelming, exuberant, and childlike aesthetic.
Over time, several sub-styles of Decora emerged, including Casual Decora, which is adapted for everyday wear; Dark Decora, which combines an abundance of accessories with a gothic color palette and motifs; Pink Decora, which is dominated by various shades of pink; and Pastel Decora, which uses softer pastel tones instead of vivid neon colors.
Decora reached its peak popularity in Japan in the early to mid-2000s but declined in visibility during the 2010s. However, there is an active international Decora community, whose members value the style for its joyful aesthetics and emphasis on creativity, individuality, and self-expression.
International Decora Day was co-founded in 2021 by US-based artists Kamilah Jones (aka Hard Decora) and Monique (aka Decora Demon), who are also known as the co-creators of Emptying the Clips Comic. The Decora community celebrates the holiday with fashion markets, giveaways, meetups, picnics, photoshoots, parties, virtual gatherings, craft sessions, shopping trips, social media campaigns and challenges, and other exciting events and activities.
