National Eat Your Vegetables Day Date in the current year: June 17, 2026

National Eat Your Vegetables Day National Eat Your Vegetables Day is an annual holiday celebrated on June 17. It was created to remind people of the importance of including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet.

From childhood on, we are constantly reminded to eat our vegetables. The reason is simple: vegetables provide nutrients that are difficult to obtain in sufficient amounts from other sources. These nutrients include carotenoids (vitamin A precursors), vitamins C and K, folate, certain minerals, dietary fiber, and various phytochemicals. Additionally, vegetables contribute to hydration because they contain a lot of water. A diverse diet containing various vegetables improves overall health, lowers the risk of chronic diseases, and may help maintain a healthy weight because vegetables are often filling relative to their calorie content.

Not all of the vegetables you consume must be fresh. The most important factor from a nutritional standpoint is eating enough vegetables overall, whether they are raw or cooked. However, for a number of reasons, at least some of the vegetables in your diet should be fresh. First, some nutrients, particularly vitamin C and folate, are destroyed during cooking, so you will absorb more of these nutrients from fresh vegetables. Second, fresh vegetables contain more fiber than cooked vegetables. Cooked vegetables have their benefits, too, so it’s best to include both in your diet.

The origins of National Eat Your Vegetables Day are unclear, but it falls in the middle of unofficial National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month (not to be confused with National Fruits & Veggies Month, which is sponsored by the Produce for Better Health Foundation and takes place every September). Despite its murky origins, the goal of National Eat Your Vegetables Day is clear: to encourage people to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables for better health.

The best way to celebrate National Eat Your Vegetables Day is to commit to eating more fresh vegetables. Here are a few ideas to try:

  • If you snack during the day, replace at least one snack with raw vegetables such as carrots, celery, cucumbers, sweet peppers, or cherry tomatoes. For something more substantial, dip vegetables into hummus, a great source of vegetable protein.
  • Use lettuce leaves for wraps instead of flatbread.
  • When ordering a burger, swap the fries for a side salad.
  • Try a vegetarian or vegan diet for a week to learn more about the variety of plant-based dishes. Even if you return to eating animal products afterwards, you may develop a greater appreciation for vegetables.
  • Start an herb or vegetable garden. You don’t need to own a house to do so; herbs, leafy greens,
  • microgreens, and cherry tomatoes can thrive indoors with the right approach.
  • Create new salad recipes by combining different vegetables and experimenting with dressings.
