Project management involves organizing and supervising a team’s work to achieve a project’s goals within given constraints of scope, time, and budget. Project managers are responsible for planning, procuring, and executing a project. They serve as the primary contact for all stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and coordination throughout the project’s lifecycle.

Modern project management evolved from engineering, particularly civil, aerospace, and military engineering. It began to take shape as a structured discipline in the mid-20th century when large-scale engineering and defense projects in the United States required the development of project management tools and techniques such as Gantt charts, work breakdown structure, resource allocation, the critical path method, and program evaluation and review technique (PERT).

The publication of formalized approaches in the 1960s and 1970s, including early standards and professional bodies, helped transform project management from an improvised practice into an established field. The world’s most influential and widely recognized professional organization for project management, the U.S.-based Project Management Institute, was founded in 1969.

Today, project management methods are used not only in engineering but also in various other industries. Project management has even been classified into subtypes based on industry, including architectural, construction, engineering, insurance claims, IT, biotechnology, localization, and research project management.

Project managers are valued professionals who ensure that all team members understand and fulfill their roles, feel empowered and supported, are aware of their teammates’ responsibilities, and trust that those responsibilities will be carried out.

Although specific duties may vary based on industry, company size, and culture, certain core responsibilities are common to all project managers. These include developing project plans, managing project stakeholders and the team, and overseeing communications, tasks, schedules, budgets, conflicts, and delivery.

Project managers are essential because they provide direction, coordination, and oversight throughout a project's lifecycle, ensuring objectives are met on time, within budget, and according to quality standards. They serve as the central point of communication among stakeholders, manage resources efficiently, mitigate risks, and resolve conflicts, thereby reducing uncertainty and preventing project failure.

International Project Management (IPM) Day was launched in 2004 by the International Institute for Learning (IIL), a global corporate training organization that provides customized learning programs, professional certification courses, online conferences, and consulting services. The main goal of IPM Day is to recognize the hard work of project managers in all industries.
