Carlos Yulo Day in Manila Date in the current year: August 4, 2025

Born on February 16, 2000 in Manila, Carlos Yulo is the son of Mark Andrew Yulo, a travel agent liaison, and Angelica Yulo (née Poquiz), a homemaker. When Yulo was seven, his grandfather saw him tumbling at a local playground and took him to the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines for training. Yulo began participating in competitions in 2008.
During his junior years, Yulo was coached by Aldrin Castañeda. In 2016, Yulo moved to Japan on a scholarship to train with Munehiro Kugimiya. He made his senior international debut at the 2018 Melbourne World Cup, winning a bronze medal on the vault. At the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Yulo became the first Filipino gymnast to qualify for a World Championship final. He won a bronze medal in the floor exercise, making him the first Filipino and the first male Southeast Asian athlete to medal at the World Championships.
In 2019, he won his first world title in Stuttgart by placing first in the floor exercise final. He became the first Filipino and Southeast Asian athlete to win a gold medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. Thanks to his placement, Yulo qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. At his first Olympics, he placed fourth in the vault final, missing the bronze medal by 0.017 points.
In 2023, Yulo amicably parted ways with his longtime coach, Kugimiya, citing personal reasons. He returned to training with Castañeda and qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. During the Olympic season, he trained with Lee Jun-ho in South Korea and Jake Jarman in England.
At the 2024 Summer Olympics, he qualified for three events: the men’s individual all-around, floor exercise, and vault. He placed 12th overall in the individual all-around final and won gold in the floor exercise and vault. Yulo made history by becoming the first Filipino gymnast, the first Filipino man, and the second Filipino athlete (after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz) to win an Olympic gold medal. He is also the first Filipino multiple-time Olympic champion.
As of 2025, he has won 24 gold, 13 silver, and six bronze medals in major competitions, including the Olympic Games, the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships, and the Southeast Asian Games. Yulo is known for his short stature, the difficulty of his routines, and his precise form.
Manila City Council member Philip H. Lacuna initiated the celebration of Carlos Yulo Day, proposing August 4 as the date because Yulo won his medals on this day at the 2024 Summer Olympics. The Carlos Yulo Day ordinance was passed on August 17, 2024, and the first celebration was held the following year. Since Carlos Yulo Day is a commemoration and not a holiday, it does not affect work schedules or wage payments.
